I Can Hear You Now! Communication Tools for Remote Learning

My Students

My students are from a small, close-knit community in rural Maine. The Maine Learning Technology Initiative which provides 1:1 access to a device for all middle school students makes things substantially easier when we are tasked with remote learning. However, as is the case in many rural communities, quite a few of my students live in multigenerational homes, or with other relatives or friends outside their immediate families. Their homes are oftentimes filled with siblings, cousins, and other housemates, which can be such a wonderful thing in a community. However, finding quiet learning time and space in many homes can be a struggle.

My students are silly yet intelligent, self-assured yet self-conscious, and always curious and inquisitive.

They are making their way through one of the most important developmental phases of their life. Their social-emotional well-being is always at the forefront of my mind, especially during a year with as many changes and unknowns as this one.

My Project

As we returned to school this year, my students and their families were given the option of returning to in-person learning, or learning remotely. Many families opted for remote learning, and ALL students have been assigned to learn remotely every Wednesday. As we proceed through the school year, it has become very evident that my students would be able to learn much more effectively if they all had access to earbuds with built-in microphones.

It is amazing how much of a difference having the right tools for learning can make!

These earbuds with built in microphones will allow my students to participate in synchronous and asynchronous remote learning opportunities as well as many in-person opportunities. Using these tools, my students will be able to effectively and confidently participate in weekly synchronous Google Meet sessions with their teachers and fellow students. The earbuds will make it much easier for them to be able to focus on the instructional videos being shared with them. They will also be able to better record videos and audio as a part of their assignments using the built-in microphone. All in all, having these tools will better help them to progress with their learning throughout this school year regardless of the circumstances we find ourselves in.
