This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kindergarten students at Hubbard Elementary School are enthusiastic and very curious about the outdoor environment. We have a wonderful grassy playground that offers an opportunity for outdoor learning and exploration which contrasts with the busy streets that surround our urban school neighborhood. The majority of students at our school come from low income homes and all our students qualify for free breakfast. Some of our students live with multiple families in cramped homes. We have a family that is living in a homeless shelter and a student was recently placed in a foster home.
As a teacher, it is my goal to create a learning environment that will enable my students to participate in hands-on activities and science experiments. One of the lessons I have planned for my students this spring is to plant seeds and to conduct science experiments using the five senses. I would like to have my students work on these lessons outdoors in order to enrich the lesson and provide a stimulating learning environment. In order to have the students participate in an outdoor classroom, we need one sturdy picnic table for the students.
I am requesting one durable picnic table for my 20 students to work at while conducting outdoor science experiments. My students will benefit from learning in an outdoor classroom by having direct experiences with nature through observation and also participate in activities that can be messy and fun! We are very eager to start recording our observations of what's growing and to hear the birds chirping!
