Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever listened to a teacher and you understand the words, but still have no idea what the teacher is talking about? Learning about pitch and pitch relationships can be like that for students. This project will help make sense of the the musical learning without the confusion.
My students are from the poverty-stricken city of East Palo Alto.
For many of my students' families, just providing the basic necessities for the children is a challenge. The students have grown up in a tough world, and music allows them to escape those problems and provides a creative outlet to express themselves. The students love music and long to learn and grow as musicians. The families want to nurture this passion, but do not have the means to support them.
My Project
This project includes a tone ladder, tone bells, and tuning forks. These materials will take the students' musical learning to the next level. The tuning forks and tone bells create clear pitches for the student to tune, improving intonation and tone. One of the most beneficial combinations is when you place the tone bells on the tone ladder. It creates a stairway of notes so the students can see as well as hear which pitches are higher and lower. It enhances their learning experience because they are engaging the many ways students learn kinesthetically because the students are physically interacting with the tone ladder, visually because they can see which is higher and lower, and aurally because they can hear the higher and lower notes as well.
Your help with this project will give the students of East Palo Alto opportunities they would not be able to have on their own.
These simple instruments will take their musical knowledge to the next level and foster their creativity in an area they are so passionate about.
