My students are brave, resilient, have a hunger to develop and grow academically, have a growth mindset.
The pandemic in Spring 2020 made 1st grade end abruptly for my incoming 2nd graders due to school closure. Being a World Language teacher for the past 12 years, I did not expect to be a homeroom teacher to help students socially distant this year. I am blessed that I already built my relationship with my students as I have known them for the past two years. Parents have expressed that they are excited for their child to be in my class this year.
Both students and I will need to adjust to the new "normal" this year. Desks that are six feet apart, requirement of wearing a face mask at school, socially distance ourself all the time, and preparing for 100% distance learning due to another possible school closure. School will not be the same as usual but meaningful education will continue through new teaching approach. Students will need the necessary devices to successfully grow and learn this year.
My Project
Since distance learning started in August, Google Classroom and Seesaw are the main online platforms used for my 2nd graders to learn and show their work in all subject areas (reading, writing, math, science, social studies, health, art, scholastic news, etc.) every day.
Without a tool for students to hear the teachers clearly and to do their work on iPad, my students will not be able to learn effectively when they come back to school in January for a face-to-face instruction.
I have a total of 15 students this year. Right now I do not have enough devices for each student to use on their own and need to borrow from other teachers. Sharing devices will not be allowed this year, and I need enough iPads for all of my students. Currently, I have 12 iPads and need 3 more for my class. Having additional iPads in my classroom will allow me to borrow less from other teachers as they need their devices to teach their students to prepare for face-to-face instruction in January.
As the desks are spread 6 feet apart, the student in the back of the room is over 30 feet away from the teachers desk. There is no way for the student who is sitting 30 feet away from me to hear my voice if I speak in a normal voice with my mask on. I can't see myself screaming out loud every day at school. The voice amplifier will help my team teacher and I save our voice daily. It will also help my students to hear clear instructions in all classes.
