This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach at a school in which 90% of students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of them are impacted by trauma which affects their learning and the way in which they relate to peers and adults. So many of them have sensory needs. They have been sensory deprived and seek to fulfill their sensory needs through behaviors such as scratching, biting, and kicking. However, they respond to such things as individual attention, pats on the back, and frequent breaks.
What they are in need of are tools to replace the inappropriate behaviors with appropriate behaviors and strategies that fulfull their sensory needs.
Self-regulation is the ability to adjust or regulate the level of alertness depending on the time of the day and the stimuli presented. For instance the ability to wake up in the morning, become alert and adapt to the school environment and demands placed on the nervous system in the school setting, including attention to tasks, cognitive demands, communication, social and emotional demands, and motor tasks (gross, fine, and visual motor). Then returning home for the evening and preparing the nervous system for rest and sleep. The ability to self- regulate the nervous system involves all of these components, including the sleep/wake cycle.
These materials will help my special kiddos learn appropriate behaviors to get their sensory needs met without having to resort to inappropriate methods.
For example, for the child who has a hard time sitting in his seat, the ergo ball chair will allow him to stay at his seat, but bouncing and using his core muscles. The chewy tubes can replace the need to bite or chew clothing or their friends! Fidgets and toys that allow children to squeeze them, can provide the fine motor movement necessary to build their muscles and a replace behaviors such as pinching and scratching their peers or inappropriate school objects.
My kiddos are students with developmental delays, autism, and array of disabilities that impact their ability to regulate themselves on their own. They need these materials to help them learn how to regulate themselves and to allow them to be included in the general education class successfully.
