My students need books that expose them to successful individuals that look like them, never stopped chasing their dreams, and made big changes to their world.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Even though it is rarely seen at the elementary level, we have put science education at the forefront for all students.
"I just wanted to tell you that science is my favorite subject and that I'm really excited to learn more."-Student comment My students are an eager, inquisitive, curious bunch of open-minded individuals with a thirst for science education.
I support science instruction for everyone, Kindergarten-5th grade. They want to get out in the garden to investigate how plants can grow. They want to build robots! They want to explore chemistry experiments, and I can't wait to introduce them to STEM careers.
Our population is 99% Black boys and girls. Every student receives free or reduced-price lunch. They live in the Northeast corner of Washington, DC, where resources can be scarce, neighborhoods can be unsafe, and households struggle to maintain their comfort levels. Every morning my students come into the school building knowing that they deserve the same education as students in the Northwest, and it my pleasure to do my best to give it to them.
My Project
All of my students receive free lunch at school. They live in low poverty communities, but they continue to come to school with a thirst for knowledge. It is my duty to consistently show them that they can achieve any dream that they may have. These books will show them that boys and girls that look just like them have made some BIG contributions to the world.
They will be able to see that their interests in math and science can potentially be the key to conquering their dreams.
As their teacher, I want to encourage my students to always press forward through adversity, like many of the characters in these books did. I want them to see themselves in these stories, and I want them to set lifetime goals based on what they learn from these books.
