My students are interested in the world around them. They are city kids with a keen interest in learning new things. They love to explore, to write, to build and to read. As the ELD teacher for kinder and 1st grade, I spend my time pushing
into classrooms to teach English language learners.
My students come from an impoverished background, but they also have strong family ties and parents who want the best for them. Our school is very large and with the latest state budget cuts, our class will be much larger than normal. This won't stop us from becoming a school family looking out for each other and learning everything we can in these first pivotal years of school.
My Project
My students are dual language students who learn math in English. Because of their low levels in listening and speaking, they need hands-on activities to practice counting and learning kindergarten skills. They love math and they do fine on worksheets. These centers will allow more time for the teacher to teach in small groups and the interactive nature will foster their discussions in English. Our students are working with basic number recognition as well as addition and subtraction. They need to spend more time with numbers and these games are a sneaky way to foster a love of math.
