(in a sing song style) "Hello, hello, hello and how are you? I'm fine, I'm fine and I hope that you are too!" Welcome to music class in Sturgeon Bay. My students love music and music loves them!
Music is one of the only activities that activates, stimulates and uses the entire brain.
All it takes is one activity that a student loves to give him/her that "rock star" confidence that will carry him/her so much farther in life and beyond their schooling years. Many of my students have started to gain that confidence, but many others are still needing to be reached.
With that in mind, I am hoping to help my small-town students succeed even more by learning independent musical skills that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives. Many students are low income and parents do not have the means to support their interest in the arts outside of public school education. I hope to make the best of my students' time in the music classroom.
I have been working with my students in music class on reading and playing musical notes and rhythms. We are now moving to the composition stage.
Students are applying their prior knowledge learned to read other people's music and now will be transferring that knowledge to composing their own!
Being able to express yourself and create is one of the greatest differences we have as humans. I've seen students get lost in their creativity as they work on writing music and have seen the pride and joy they show when performing what is written or hearing what they wrote performed by others. What a gift!
We are in need of pencils and erasers in our classroom to help with the details that come with composition. Dry erase markers will help students to use the classroom whiteboard for examples and of course, the world of kids is also filled with the dreaded cold and flu that comes with winter and hand sanitizer will help us all stay healthy.
