I Can Check It Out by Myself!

My Students

Help me give my students the opportunity to use Chromebooks in the library which in turn gives them the power of technology and all the benefits it entails.

Our students love spending time in the library and it is the hub of our school.

We are a rural K- 4th grade school. The students at my school are primarily low income with the majority of them being free or reduced price lunch program recipients. The school is a safe, loving environment where they can thrive. We have a diverse student population, but they are alike in that they are eager to read, learn, and embrace technology.

My students look forward to learning each day using various resources utilized to engage a variety of learners. Each student understands the importance of setting goals and having a strong work ethic. My students thrive in our library that fosters creative learning through fun, engaging activities!

We are limited with our district dollars and would like funds to purchase a Chromebook to have a self-check-in/out of our library books.

My Project

Students will not solely have to depend on me to check out their selection. It will allow my students to have more independence in the library.

When students are checking out their own books, I am able to help more students choose books, participate in a center activity, or read with a student or small group.

There isn’t a delay in check out when I am helping a student find something – the line just keeps moving along. When my older students come down randomly during the day to get a new book, they are able to check themselves out even if I’m teaching.

Students with special needs will be able to access the touch screen to allow them to feel the independence. I'm not just doing circulation. I'm also teaching information literacy. I'm teaching about being independent—the intangible parts of learning.

I want every student to feel at home in the library.

My hope is that this becomes their space and that they know how to use it. I want to make this space a student-centered space.
