Help me give my students an introduction to ordinary people who made a difference and the realization that perhaps THEY can make a difference, too!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach Pre-Kindergarten. I think that Pre-K is a unique, very fantastic grade level. My youngest student is 3.9 years old, and my oldest is 4.9 years old! My children come from very low income homes. My kids speak many languages: Arabic, Bengali, Spanish, and English. We are part of NYC Mayor Mike DeBlasio's Pre-K initiative. This initiative guarantees that every four-year-old in New York City will have access to this life-changing educational opportunity, with roughly 70,000 children expected to enroll. It seems to be a great success. I am proud to be part of it. It has indeed provided my Pre-K students with a special, unforgettable opportunity to increase language skills, cognitive skills, and socio-emotional skills. It is amazing to see these children grow.
My Project
When I saw this collection of books, I HAD to get it for my students. It's a collection of simple books about simple people who changed the world and made it better. Perhaps these books will inspire my Pre-K kids to make the world a better place.
In "I am Rosa Parks," an 11-year-old Rosa Parks, in the face of hatred and racism, practiced the values of self respect and respect for others, that her mother and grandmother taught her.
This practice, would prepare Ms. Rosa Parks to be a civil rights leader.
In "I am Neil Armstrong," 8-year-old Neil talks about the time he encountered one of his first challenges: climbing a tall tree. Young Neil identified and practiced the traits that were necessary to reach his goals. One day, of course, with determination and hard work, his goal was accomplished. He was the first person to walk on the moon!
These books tell the story of people who changed the world and will be forever part of history. Being young wasn't a problem; it was their time to make mistakes and develop the determination that was needed to change the world.
