I Can Be Brave! Medical Practice for Students with Autism

Help me give my students seating to practice medical, dental, and self-care toleration skills!

This project expired on May 6, 2022.

My Students

Our school is an ungraded school currently serving students ages 5 to 11, with plans to serve students through age 21. It is the first school of its kind in NY State—a public charter school devoted solely to children with autism. Our school is located in the South Bronx, providing services to a community in need of autism specific services and supports. Our educational program uses the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis to provide 1:1 and small group instruction and individualized programming to each and every one of our students. Our students are strong, silly, and hardworking—they are truly incredible young kids. They do, however, have a lot of challenges in their day to day lives.

Developing skills around social interaction, communication, and toleration of a variety of events (e.g., medical appointments, hair cuts) are some of the most critical, yet difficult for our students to acquire.

My Project

We are in full swing of our 2021-2022 school year! Since our doors reopened to in-person instruction in September 2020, we have adjusted to new safety protocols, learned new skills, come together in community, AND had so much fun! NYC Autism Charter School places a huge focus on teaching our students essential toleration skills related to medical- and dental- toleration, hair appointments, and important self-care skills, especially in the independent toileting arena. Unfortunately, being able to safely teach these skills was one of the first things to be put on hold as we navigated safety/hygiene protocols during the beginning of the pandemic.

With vaccines becoming available for our staff and the recent availability for school-aged children, we are now able to re-start these important programs that were previously on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic!

By donating, you will help us purchase high-quality equipment (e.g., a reclining medical chair that will allow them to practice simulated exams in an environment that more closely models what they will experience during those actual visits with their doctors) that can be utilized to enhance our toleration and self-care programming. These materials will also provide our instructional team with opportunities to promote independence in self-care routines. This will contribute not only to the variety of programming available in our students’ days, but also to the growth of students as independent individuals both at school, their homes, and in the community.
