My Students
"A Little Progress each day adds up to results" - Satya Nani
My school is located in the heart of Southwest Atlanta, Georgia. We are a title 1 school meaning that we have a high percentage of impoverished students. A high percentage of our students are "latch key" children and to no fault of their own hold responsibilities in the home that should be designated to their parent(s). Despite their home life we still hold our scholars to a high standard. Our scholars come to school daily and excel. They are eager to learn and we are eager to equip them with the tools they need to thrive. Thrive not just in high school but college as well. Here at our middle school, we want to inspire our scholars to be life long learners and contributors to the community. Though it is difficult to see past the situations at home, we offer our students a "great escape" from whatever is negatively impacting them outside of school.
My Project
At any given time through out the day I could be called upon to intervene with any of 700+ scholars. I find when I intervene with our students that the roots cause of their issues are beyond our control. As I mentioned previously many of our students are dealing with some serious stuff at home. In my office, I offer our scholars social emotional support. I created a "Zen Den" with snacks, bean bags, dim lighting, and sensory objects. I am asking for the requested items so that the Den can keep its Zen. The Zen Den has been an incentive to our scholars and has given them something to look forward to. The goal of the den is to provide scholars with a relaxing place to decompress.
