My kids often tell me that art class is their favorite place to be. I like to make it a safe place for them too. Many come during lunch to do additional artwork.
My students are very motivated.
Due to budgetary constraints, many of them have never taken art before, or haven't had it since elementary school. With each project, I see such excitement in their faces. Most of my kids come from very poor backgrounds and have never had the opportunity to work with the types of supplies we've been so lucky to get through Donors Choose.
My Project
I'm looking towards 'Empowering my Students Through Art'. This year, we did an acrylic paint project for Black History Month that I'd like to expand upon in the coming year. We learned about the history of the Harlem Renaissance and studied several African American artists of this time. Then, my students painted one of that artist's masterpieces. The project was an overwhelming success! The only issue was we didn't have enough space to put paintings to dry. This donation of a drying rack would give us the ability to grow.
By 'Empowering Students Through Art', my kids can learn from a historical standpoint, as well as an artistic one.
I won't have to limit which classes can paint, and more students could complete this project (and others) at the same time.
