I have a classroom of very special little kiddos!! All of my students are individuals with autism, but I like to focus on their abilities and all the wonderful things that they can do. My classroom is a special place where these struggling learners need a lot of supports to be able to shine as learners and show their potential. The students range in age from 5-8 years of age and come from different backgrounds. I have non-verbal students, bilingual students and students that have communication needs. A main focus this year will be for my students to truly understand their emotions and the emotions of others. There will be a great emphasis on using resources to help my students better understand their feelings and emotions. My hope is that by helping students in this area, it will help each child to succeed in all areas.
My Project
The materials I have chosen are hands-on and will really help my students develop and understand their own emotions and the emotions of others. These materials will be incorporated daily for the students during social groups, one-on-one time, and also during moments of frustration throughout the school day. The puppets will be used to help the students explain their emotions in a less stressful way. The mirrors will help students to understand their facial expressions and then learn to appropriately use facial expressions in everyday life. All other materials will be used in social groups to work with peers to understand emotions and interact in an appropriate way.
