This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a small, cozy neighborhood elementary school in Virginia. The children in my building are lively and great kids. They appreciate and evolve from positive, but firm motivation and are very bright when focused and interested. We were named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2006. Our school was renamed (from J.E.B. Stuart) in June of 2018.
I love teaching grades Pre-K through First, because kids at these stages are so enthusiastic and happy to learn!
I feed off of their enthusiasm and it makes me want to provide them with even more innovative learning experiences!
My Project
I am really enjoying virtual teaching!
There is no commute, I eat my lunch with no interruptions, and I do not have to raise my voice to be heard.
I know the reason WHY we are online is gruesome (COVID-19); however, this method has made some procedures much easier and smoother to maneuver.
The DOWNSIDE to teaching online are the technological issues that pop up at the most inopportune times (e.g., disconnection, lagging uploads/downloads, glitching, knocked sound/video) and the fact that I cannot be hands-on with my kids--especially when they do not understand a concept.
But I just continue to adapt and push through!
Online, I try to keep my routines similar to how I would execute them in person--small groups (i.e., breakout rooms), whole group discussions, and independent practice (i.e., working on the same activity but offline). The educational items--reading flash cards, sensory math cards, ABC stepping stones, and math trays--I am asking for will help me teach this year as well as when I return to in-person instruction.
Knowing that virtual teaching will not be forever, I am requesting items that are eclectic and can be used in multiple settings.
These items are interactive, skill-building, and can be used with my document camera (which, when connected to my laptop shows what I am doing in real-time) so while not tangible, the kids can still experience them until we are back in-person.
