We are a medium sized school with about 400 students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. We have approximately 70% of our student body on free or reduced lunch. We have a large Hispanic population with 15% of our students classified as English Learners. I try to provide opportunities for our students to learn to collaborate and think critically.
We are a small coastal community and many of our students never leave town, so I try to provide experiences for them that allow them to see the broader world picture.
My Project
My students need books that reflect their heritage and background. Stories with believable characters and realistic situations that will draw them into reading.
I am striving to get my middle schoolers to like reading.
Providing copies of books like I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter allows students to enter into reading something they can connect with.
Many of my students do not like to read, they struggle with picking books they want to read. Many pick books based on the size "to look smart" I want them to be able to pick up a book and want to read!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
