My Students
The first reading assignment for the sixth graders at Encinal Junior Jets will be "I Am Malala," the story of a young girl in Pakistan whose insistence on receiving an education almost cost her life.
Encinal Middle/High School is a public school in Alameda, CA, serving 1200 students in grade 6-12.
The school is unique in its diversity - ethnic, racial, and socio-economic - and the curriculum we provide reflects and celebrates that diversity. Our class is a language arts/history core: in sixth grade history we begin with the ancient civilizations of the middle east, and in "I Am Malala" we believe we have a contemporary piece of literature that would compliment our history work.
My Project
"I Am Malala" will be the opening reading assignment for all 6th graders just starting Encinal. Through this book we hope to teach the importance - and fragility - of education, through a story that is both heart-wrenching and hopeful. We will explore the book together as a class, follow the life of Malala since she left Pakistan (and subsequently won a Nobel Peace Prize), and share our new understanding with others at the school through writing and art projects.
It is our hope that reading this book will be a powerful experience for our students, especially for those who either do not see the value of coming to school or who take their education for granted.
