Help me give my students an opportunity to work in collaboration with peers and be in charge of their growth through Math Instant Learning Centers, Power Pen Materials and more hands-on activities.
Our school caters to students with special needs. I have 72 non-graded students with ages ranging from 14-21 years and are distributed in 8 different classes. Every student has an Individualized Education Plan where goals are written including their special needs. The cognitive level of students would range from K to grade 4! And some are non-verbal and with limited hand grip. We are using Tech Talk devices, pictures, eye gaze, and a lot of visual aids during instruction to ensure that there will be expressive and receptive communication going on. Their face lit up every time they were able to touch a device knowing that they are heard. Some of them are sensory that they like to move, touch, make a sound, listen to a sound and put things together.
Majority of my students learn best through hands-on activities and by practicing skills repeatedly.
They enjoy exploring materials laid down before them. It becomes easier for them to make the connection and to put meaning into their work when given the opportunity to touch, hear and see what they are learning.
My Project
My classes are composed of students with different cognitive levels, different learning needs, and individualized educational plans. Teaching a lesson will always need scaffolding, differentiation, some accommodation, and/or modifications. In teaching Math, giving students practice time and opportunities for a real-life application has been beneficial for my students. I have identified the skills and applications that most of my students need to enhance to gain fluency. These skills and concepts can build up through the use of work stations which they can rotate based on schedules as assigned. My project is to create these Math Work stations using the materials requested in this projects.
The Math work stations will enable students to practice their skills at their own pacing and will give them the opportunity to have ownership of their learning.
Each station will have specific task cards and checklist for students to follow and work on. The range of work will be from simple math skills to problem solving skills that make use of real-world situations. Staff will be assigned to monitor movements to ensure proper use so that goals can be met. Students will follow schedules given and mainly focus on gaining math fluency, developing independence, and organizational skills.
