My Students

My 8th grade students have amazed me on a daily basis this year. Many of these students face obstacles to learning that seem insurmountable, yet they show up every day and do their best to manage the competing priorities in their lives.

My students exhibit heroism on their epic journeys; facing monsters, enduring hardship, and helping others.

Certain books describe how young people embrace their inner heroes and turn adversity into action. The characters serve as role models and inspire these young people to excel.

My Project

Not long ago, my students discovered the joy of reading a class novel and exploring the storyline, the characters, and the themes as a community of learners. While they enjoy choosing their own novels to read for pleasure, they have been asking what we're going to read next as a group. When I told them "something related to Greek mythology," they were thrilled beyond my expectations.

Students tell me that they love getting new books - ones that have never been touched and still have the "new book smell." It's rare for them to be the first to open an unread copy and I want them to have that experience in my classroom.

"The Lightning Thief" is a book that reminds readers to be brave, to make good choices, to be kind - all messages my students need as they head off to high school.
