This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school serves almost 400 New York City public school students. Ninety-four percent of the population are minority students. Eighty percent qualify for free or reduced-rate lunch. About 30% are students with disabilities and English Language Learners.

We are a school that specializes in academics, business, and art while promoting college and career readiness with year-round experiences that include many work-based and service-learning opportunities for all our hard-working students including those economically disadvantaged.

Although my students are hard-working, enterprising, and try to prepare for themselves for the day, many students in my school lack access to basic hygiene products, such as feminine pads, tissues, and toiletries. Having to stress about basic needs lead to students to worry about embarrassing stigma. Lack of good hygiene practices can result in serious health consequences causing students to fall further behind.

As an educator leader I need resources to address issues of inequality and stigma, ensuring that student learning is not hindered by lack of access to the products they need to live a healthy hygienic lifestyle they deserve.

My Project

Proper hygiene means better health. Keeping your body healthy and clean helps prevent illness and infection from bacteria and/or viruses. Maintaining good hygiene also helps students have better self-esteem which leads to increased participation, higher academic rigor, heightened empowerment, and more successful opportunities.

Many students are embarrassed to ask for these hygiene products or may be unaware that these products will help them feel better as well as stay healthier.

Relieved of the financial burden, access and possession of these starter pack products will encourage conversations with their parents about the importance of self-care and hygiene at home and in the office (school).
