My Project
I am a special education teacher for students in grades 9-12. My students have varying degrees of learning difficulties. Due to the extremely high poverty rates in our community, all students in the district receive free meals. Despite their struggles, my students are resilient, hardworking and eager to learn.
Most of my students struggle to get their basic needs met.
My project is requesting health and hygiene items for my students. Because many of them come from poverty situations, they often lack access to hygiene items such as deodorant, skin care, toothbrush/toothpaste and menstrual products.
No child should lack access to the basic items that are needed to care for themselves and their personal wellness. I try keep these items on hand in my pantry to give my students the dignity that they deserve. Providing these items helps my students focus on learning because they are not worried about being bullied or laughed at by others due to their ability to maintain good personal hygiene.
