My Project

One of the big issues the pandemic helped highlight in our schools and our community is how fragile our fresh food system is. Parts of Alaska have a lovely summer growing season, but it is quite short. This issue is not specific to Alaska, either. Hydroponics can be part of that solution.

My students come from all over the country and have experienced many different ways of life.

This project will help them consider not only how these sustainable food growing practices can help our community here, but also wherever they may travel in the future. Food insecurity and lack of access to fresh produce is an issue all across our country, and the goal of this project is to mitigate these issues and set my students up for a more successful future..

I have carefully picked my materials to best fit my students and our situation. The growing system I have chosen is large enough that we could get enough food for our classroom, and likely even more to share. It allows for a variety of plants to be grown, due to the different tray heights and water tanks. The lights and pumps are included, and we can set our light timers ourselves. I have also chosen some seeds to get us started, good fertilizers so we can continue all year, and even some seedling starting mats/containers to jump-start our project. A PH tester will help us take good care of our plants and ensure the safety of our food.
