Hydroponics: Food Grown Without Dirt!

Help me give my students the opportunity to grow plants and food a different way by the use of water.

My Students

Our school is in a low poverty area. We have over 90% free and reduced-price lunches. My students can not always afford items to do science projects. Some of my students have to share their items, and I would like to allow all of my students to have their own project.

I teach 6 classes of 6th grade students all of who are very inquisitive and needs hands on activities.

Most of my students love science and want to learn as much as they can. I teach 2 classes of advanced/gifted science with 40 students. My other 4 science classes are regular science class with 80 students.

My Project

In sixth grade our first unit is Earth Science, our second unit is Space Science, and our third unit is over water and the atmosphere. This hydroponic set up that I am requesting can be used for all three of my units. Students learn so much more when they can actually have hands on experience and this will provide that.

Donations to this project will allow my students realize there are more ways to grow plants and food then putting seeds in dirt.

Dirt is important for us on Earth to grow food, but there are other ways to grow food. One of our concerns in space travel is growing food for our astronauts. My students will be able to grow food without the use of dirt and maybe translate that into space technology.

The possibility of hydroponics endless. Maybe with my students they can realize how to end world hunger or feed the space travelers without the use of dirt.
