A huge challenge for my students is growing up in an urban city with more building than trees. My students are unable to daily interface and explore their natural world due to safety issues in their neighborhood. Through science "I build and encourage an appreciation for nature and the planet".
My kindergarteners are very mature six year olds .
They are funny, inquisitive and natural observers. Many are very independent because they help out at home with their smaller brothers and sisters.
Many of my kindergarteners are extremely organized, focused, and born leaders but do not enter kindergarten knowing their alphabets or sounds. The issue is not that they are not capable of learning their alphabets; but many parents not all in the area think that school is where all their child's learning takes place. It is important to change this perception. Home is where everything begins and ends.
My students' school demographics are 99.9% African American and at-risk for failing. 99% of the students receive free and reduced lunches. My students' pride and joy is their neighborhood school. They would stay all day if it was possible. The school is a home away from home.
My Kindergarteners are eager to learn and try anything new and giggle through the whole process.
My Project
Many of our students are going to be challenged because of larger class sizes. By getting this grant my students can still have an engaging and exciting time learning about science. Because of the increase amounts of students I am unable to afford to personally fund all the projects I do with my students.
These Science Kits will give each child a chance to construct their own learning by having a hands on experience. The Sensory Dome kits will allow me to teach about, " The 5 Senses" while working on the unit, "How Things Grow". These materials will allow me to cover more material quicker and keep students engaged in the learning process. Students will use kits to demonstrate that plants can grow without soil (Hydroponics).
Kindergarteners are natural born observers. Observing their very own plants from seed to a blooming plant will give students a sense of autonomy. Working together in their table groups will encourage collaboration and communication between students
Every child deserves to have the feeling of "Being excited to be at school".
My students enjoy science because its... like magic to them. When students watch a chrysalis change into a butterfly and harvest seeds from a pumpkin they picked.
Then plant those same seeds and watch the cycle began again. The educational benefits received from these science kits are numerous. Students will be better problem solvers, more confident and have better oral presentation skills.
