This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach four-year-old kindergarten in a large urban public school district in Wisconsin. Currently, our entire school district receives free breakfast and lunch. My 25 students attend full-day K4. We serve regular education students, special education students and English Language Learners. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and cultures. It is a wonderful, inclusive environment for children!
My students come to school excited to learn!
Since it is their first school experience, they are ready and enthusiastic to learn. Our school has wonderful parents who participate in their child's educational experiences and value education as an important part of their child's success in the future. Because our K4 program is "school board-funded" and K4 is not required by Wisconsin law, we receive no additional funds for anything.
It would be incredibly helpful to have a "Hydration Station" in my classroom. Our water fountains do not work well in our old building. Our school is 100 years old and needs maintenance that keeps getting deferred.
Students come to school the day after Labor Day. Our building has no air conditioning. It is incredibly hot in our old building for several weeks until fall begins and can heat up again as early as May. When school ends in mid-June, it is very hot in our building. Although I ask parents to send their child daily with a refillable water bottle, not all children come with them. The refillable water fountain is not by my classroom so children with water bottles need to go with an adult to refill it.
My students need to stay hydrated. It is hard to work when you are thirsty! My students that forget to bring a bottle or refillable cup of water or may not have access to it. Any support would be appreciated!
