Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My campus serves students from 3 years old up to 5th grade. Over 85% of our students are from low-income households. In addition to our robust Dual Language: Two Way program, about 45% of our population are English Language Learners. These are resilient children consistently putting their best foot forward with an enthusiasm for learning. As the new campus librarian, I couldn't feel more welcomed by my students.

The sheer joy I've seen when a student learns that we have books on their favorite topic in the library has been infectious.

When a new PreK 4 student arrived on her first day of school this year, she was all smiles beneath her mask as she very excitedly shared that she was getting to learn today and couldn't wait to share it all with her little sister. These children are enthusiastic readers and information seekers and I'm so very proud to be their librarian.

My Project

Makerspaces are wonderful interactive STEAM learning centers and having one in a central space like the library provides access to every student in our school. As the campus' new librarian, I was so excited to begin the Makerspace project for our campus. As things currently stand, a traditional Makerspace is not going to cut it in order to serve all of our students (both face-to-face and remote) while meeting the current safety standards.

With these materials, our students can still experience the library Makerspace safely whether face-to-face or remote.

By focusing on activities with disposable, household supplies, remote students can follow along with the activity from home and face-to-face students can build without supplies changing hands. The storage bins can be used to organize materials in advance and I can sanitize them between classroom visits.

Our students would love the opportunity to step away from a device to build with their hands. I've already lined up several books to introduce our upcoming activities and can't wait to get started with your help!
