My students need flag football flags and pinnies to keep their hearts and legs pumping, but bring their recess pickup football games to a new, safer level.

My Students

At our suburban Texas school, we have almost 200 students who call 4th grade their home for the year.

They are an active, inquisitive group who love to learn, and their transformation from August to June is amazing and one that we as teachers are privileged to witness.

As a large group, they hail from different backgrounds and upbringings. These nine- and ten-year-olds push conventional boundaries with outside the box thinking and there is no doubt that they will make our world a better place.

My Project

Hut...hut...HIKE!

When people think of Texas, they think of cowboy boots and football, and with good reason.

Football is definitely a part of the culture in our great state. It brings people together, whether they're watching it from the comfort of their couch with their feet propped up, sitting on a hard, metal bleacher with no regard for their own comfort, or juking down the turf with heart pulsing and head racing, headed for the end zone. Football knows no age, socioeconomic, or race boundaries - it is a community equalizer.

Our school boasts seven fourth grade classes of active, energetic students who love learning, but they often love recess even more. Recess is a time to get their hearts pumping, break out of their homerooms, and cross paths with others. Every day at recess on our playground field, we see students of different races, genders, and social groups that may not normally gravitate toward each other - football changes that. The students' love of the game brings them together, and the lessons they learn on the field from each other can't always be taught by us as teachers in the classroom.

As teachers, our job is to ensure the safety of our students. Football flags and pinnies will up their game and help us encourage them to stay active, but safe.
