My students need learning games, flexible seating accommodations, and kinesthetic materials to meet their additional needs and to make their educational career more successful.
As a first year teacher, I am learning how to best meet the needs of my students that have additional needs. This classroom is a safe place for students with learning disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to learn at their own pace while being taught the standards used in the general education curriculum. We are practicing our fundamental reading skills, pre-vocational skills, and new math skills. Although students come to this class twice during the day, they have science, social studies, and related arts (band, art, chorus, P.E.) with students who do not receive services from me. Inclusion is an important aspect in today's society that Gibbs Middle School implements to make sure all students have the same opportunities to learn and grow as a team. Our classroom enjoys learning new, challenging skills while feeling comfortable with peers and me within the classroom.
My Project
New books will allow my students will be able to choose books that will allow them to read independently at their functional level. Having classroom books will save us instructional time so we will not have to transition to the library. Classroom materials such as dice and counters are accommodations needed when practicing math skills and learning new math strategies. Reading games will aid with students comprehension levels, reading fluency, and vocabulary. Repetition of reading strategies between instructional activities and learning games will enhance reading and create more chances to decode unfamiliar and familiar words. Flexible seating items will make the environment more comfortable so students can focus on what they are learning. All materials listed will create a welcoming, comfortable environment so students can learn at their level of instructional, learn with peers, provide multiple ways to learn, and have fun.
