This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I would like to propose a "classroom care package" for the hurricane victims. My students will create care packages of supplies that can be used by young hurricane victims. We will create packages of materials such as pencils, paper, scissors, glue, pencil boxes, pens, crayons, and markers. I teach first grade at an elementary school in urban Chicago. I have approximately twenty students in my classroom. As a class we have been discussing the effects that the hurricane had on the people of Louisiana and Mississippi. My students have shown great concern towards the well being of the people that were effected by the hurricane. Many of my students have watched the news with their parents or have family that live there. My students stated that they wished they could help them, so as a class they decided that the were going to bring in money, water, and other supplies to send to the victims. As first graders, I believe that they would benefit greatly by having the opportunity to send supplies to young victims that are a lot like them. It will teach my students the impact that your actions have on others. This will give them a positive outlook on human nature and being able to lend a hand to people that are in need across the country. The impact of writing letters of hope and sending supplies will in the long run benefit my students to become productive citizens that will continue to help people in need.
