It is hard to find the words to understand the terrible impact of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina on students in the Gulf Region.
We all want to help, but we often don't know where to start.
I am a classroom teacher at P77K in Brooklyn, which is a school for students with autism and other pervasive developmental disorders. I have eight middle-school students in my class. For the first several months of school we will focus on the theme of "Family and Friends." It is important for my students to see that they are part of a community, not just in their neighborhood, but also the larger community of students everywhere. Communities work together to help those in need. My students have often received help from others in their community. I want them to see how they are sometimes they ones who can help.
As children and families in the Gulf Region attempt to rebuild their lives, often everything they had and with which they were familiar is gone. We are asking that you help us to send classroom care packages to those regions affected by Hurricane Katrina. The supplies we would like to send include pencils, crayons, paints, and brushes. My students will donate some of their own classroom supplies and will create letters and cards to show their support and encouragement.
Please donate to this project and help my students to help others.
