I teach at a Title 1 School in southeast Houston. Most of my students are on free or reduced lunch. Many of them come from single parent homes that are economically challenged and do not have the funds for the basic necessities let alone extra things. The apartments that surround the school, where the majority of my students live, were so devastated by Hurricane Harvey that most of my students' apartments were flooded and they needed to evacuate. Some of my students are now living with extended family, friends, or in a shelter. Their lives changed drastically just within that horrible week of the Hurricane and are still trying to get back on their feet. I want to continue to support them now that we are back in school. I believe school should be the place they feel safe
My students, grades Pre-K to 5th grade use the computer lab on a daily basis for all kinds of activities and projects. More than 90% of the activities require that the students use headphones but unfortunately most of my students do not have the funds to purchase any headphones or the ones they do have are so cheap that they do not last very long or become broken.
If kids do not have headphones, they cannot hear what is going on in the computer program and they are not able to learn.
Some of the teachers have tried to buy headphones at the dollar store but, again, these are not very well made and break after a few uses. As you can imagine, this is very frustrating for both the students and the teachers.
Getting these headphones will allow the students to get the most out of the computer programs they are learning with and achieve the results they are supposed to in Math, Reading, Science, and Technology.
