My Students

Do you remember what it was like to grab a book, fighting to stay awake because you couldn't put it down? My students have not had an opportunity to have such a feeling, until now.

My students are mostly special needs based.

Many children have learning disabilities and/or individualized education plans. They are also in an economically disadvantaged urban district. They are forced to survive in an environment that does not lend itself well to reading or education. Here a street education is more valued and reading is seen as unnecessary.

My Project

I need 32 copies of the novel The Hunger Games. This novel is similar to the classic Lord of the Flies with themes of survival, government, good vs evil and love or disdain for your fellow man. This novel will help them comprehend the same themes and experience them in a contemporary setting that they can more readily understand and grasp. This novel is more appropriate for the students that I teach because instead of the themes being presented by 12 year old British boys of WWII they are presented through young adults set in a futuristic North America. The setting change alone will grab my students' attention and they will be hungry for more.

Instead of turning on the TV to get away from life for a little while, let them be hungry and crave The Hunger Games by Suzanna Collins.
