My Project

I teach in an urban, diverse school of 3,000+ students in the heart of Central New York. A typical classroom can have students from Myanmar, Somalia, Bosnia, and Belarus learning side-by-side with students who have never left the state. It makes for quite an interesting teaching and learning experience! The majority of my students come from low-income homes. We are a refugee relocation city, and many of our students are the sons and daughters of newly arrived immigrants. Built for 2,000 students, is often overcrowded. Teachers share classrooms, and space is at a premium. Even still, my goal is to make my classroom a safe and versatile space where students can reach their fullest potential!

My students constantly ask me for something to eat.

I usually have a supply of noodles for them to grab, heating them with the electric kettle I keep in my classroom just for that purpose. Unfortunately, I learned that this is a fire code violation, and I am requesting cookies, trail mix, and cracker sandwiches that will stave off my students' hunger so they can learn.
