Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Do you remember what high school lunches look like? They are still *that* unappetizing. Literally yesterday we were given bagels that were so hard that they could not be sliced. Every day I have hungry students in class who refuse to eat school breakfast and lunch, but they need to eat in order to think and function at school. I teach English and ethnic studies in a project-based learning program that focuses on theater at a continuation high school. Every semester, my students write, act, and direct their own play! This means we are off-campus every day from November 6th up until the holidays and our field trip lunches are tragically even less edible than our regular school lunches.

All of my students are low-income students of color, and often come to school hungry or straight up hungry.

Continuation high school students often struggle with motivation to come to school, and to keep doing the right thing, but knowing they will have something to eat that they like helps motivate our students to show up. They are doing their best, but they need your support to keep going! For breakfast, I want to give students more options- pop-tarts, cereal, and bagels/ oatmeal that we will provide. I am hoping to make rice and beans every day with the rice cooker and slow cooker, as well as offer cups of noodle, easy mac, and other foods that students have requested.

Please help us get food that students will eat! We are trying to write, act, and direct our own play, but we will need sustenance to do so!
