My 6th graders are a hungry bunch of growing people! As these students transition to middle school, they adjust to some big changes around food. For example, many students will be arriving to school earlier than in elementary so they may be preparing their own breakfast or having breakfast at school. Another change for many students will be that they no longer have a morning snack break like in elementary. These might seem like small adjustments, but for an 11 year old, these are changes in routine that they need to learn to manage. As 6th grade students take on so many new responsibilities, it is valuable to be able to support them where they may struggle.
Whenever I give a student a snack, it is an opportunity to remind them that they need to fuel their body, it is important to eat, and I value them as human beings.
Many students struggle to get the nutrients and fuel they need within the school schedule. These snacks will be available to students who are hungry for any reason. While I try to make snacks last, I know that students are often hungry and would benefit from a snack that will help them stay focused on the learning. Students often don't want to eat lunch and it is important to teach them healthy behaviors such as eating meals.
It sends a message to students that I see them, I care for them, and I know their needs matter. Help me deliver this message!
