This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
A majority of our students' families here at our school deal with poverty, homelessness, and limited income which unfortunately result in my students having barriers that get in the way of their learning. I tell my students all the time that Education is the key to a successful future in today's society. I believe my job is to limit any barriers I can so that they can learn without limits. They are so amazing and full of potential, each one different in personalities. This project is for them. If my students have what they need, then nothing can stand in their way.
My Project
Research shows that chronic hunger can prevent students from making the most of a formal education, no matter how hard they try to ignore its effects. The sad truth is that hunger can have physical and psychological effects on young people that make learning substantially difficult. A few months ago, I decided it might be a good idea to have a Snack Bar in my classroom where students know that they can grab a snack or a drink if they find that they're hungry and cannot focus on their learning. I know from experience that when you're hungry, it makes learning more difficult even when you try to push through. I believe that as an educator, my job is to limit barriers that I can control to provide a better learning opportunity for each student in my classroom. My students respond to this very well but you can imagine it is beginning to get extremely costly for me. I would appreciate anything you are able to give my students.
