I teach Environmental Science in a Title One Equity plus high school where 45% of our students receive a free or reduced price lunch. We also host one of the county's ESL (English as a Second Language) programs, so our school is quite diverse. Regardless, all my students come from hard-working families and deserve the best when it comes to their education.
Earlier in the year we studied eating patterns in other countries. We researched 16 different countries, finding foods grown or produced, traditional meals and customs along with general statistics and location of the country. My students then found a traditional recipe, made the meal, and we sampled the results in class. To conclude the project students created a PowerPoint presentation of their researched information.
I have found a book called "Hungry Planet" that features vivid photographs, statistics, essays, cultural descriptions and family recipes from 30 families in 24 different countries. I am requesting 10 books for my students. The book will be a vital addition to the project research but would be used throughout the year as we study other environmental issues. For example, the essay topics correlate with environmental problems we learn about such as overfishing, feeding 6 billion people and problems from overpopulation. The statistics are up-to-date for country population totals, fertility rates, infant mortality rates, life expectancy etc. for our population and demography studies. Finally, the book allows students to learn about other countries; their location, culture, traditions and customs which unfortunately many American children are not exposed to.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
