This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a fifth-year, third-grade teacher in an inner-city school. There is an extremely high poverty level at Westside, and one hundred percent of the children receive free lunch. During my time as a teacher, I have witnessed these children overcome adversity. These kiddos are so incredibly resilient, and that is such an inspiration. I truly have a passion for teaching, and I am humbled to spend each day with these children. My kiddos are compassionate, pure, and kind. I find myself learning countless life lessons from them. I’m supposed to be teaching them, but I’m learning way more from my students.
Although this school year looks very different from previous years, I am still having the time of my life with these kiddos.
One of my favorite parts about being a teacher is getting to know my students. We have smaller class sizes with our rotating schedule, so I’ve been able to have more one on one time with my students. There is a lot of uncertainty with our new “normal,” but I am determined to make this school year great!
My Project
While teaching in a high poverty school system, I have witnessed some heartbreaking things. My students are constantly faced with hardships. These kids have endured way more than a child should. A lot of my students are raising their siblings all while trying to take care of themselves.
Sadly, my students come to school hungry.
I try my best to make sure their bellies stay full, but it is hard to keep my snack cabinet stocked. This project will help me fill my snack cabinet with food for my students to eat while at school and at home.
