Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Eric Carle said, "We have eyes, and we're looking at stuff all the time, all day long. And I just think that whatever our eyes touch should be beautiful, tasteful, appealing, and important." My students with disabilities need to read books with these qualities to help them fall in love with reading!
Our special education department currently serves over 60 students with disabilities.
These students are at risk of academic, vocational, and social failure. 100% of our special education students require modifications, accommodations, and differentiated instruction.
My Project
Eric Carle's art is distinctive and instantly recognizable. The themes of his stories are usually drawn from his extensive knowledge and love of nature, an interest shared by most children. Carle attempts to make his books not only entertaining, but also to offer his readers the opportunity to learn something about the world around them.
Eric Carle's picture books offer many literary opportunities to practice in reading comprehension, figurative speech, and vocabulary. Because they can be read more quickly than a novel, picture books are perfect for studying elements of fiction (plot, character, setting, point of view, and theme).
Reading independently is a goal for all elementary students, especially students with disabilities.
Elementary students begin their literature experience with board books and picture books. Later, they graduate up to easy readers, chapter books, and full novels. With this collection of Eric Carle's picture books, my students will make steps towards reading independence.
