Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello DonorsChoose, I teach at Burroughs Elementary School. Over 90 percent of our students are Latinos and come from low-income families. I am a 4th grade ESL teacher and currently have 31 students enrolled in my class. I have a wonderful classroom, and I want to understand the world they live in. During discussion time, they often have many “Why” questions. I encourage my students to pick up a book and read about what they are interested in. I love books, and I really enjoy reading to my students. The first 20 minutes of the day are dedicated to fluency. Students are invited to go to our classroom library and choose a book. Most of the books I have bought myself from book clubs. After our fluency time, I like to model fluency by reading books relating to the theme(s) we are covering in class. For example, if we are learning about animal habitats, I like to read books about bears or seals. Students really like this time of the day. Many students ask me to read a certain book to them. Some students follow my reading carefully and want to pair-read with me. I am currently reading Holes by Louis Sachar. A few students have gone out to the Chicago Public Library and checked out a copy. The “love for reading” is one of the most important values a teacher can instill into a child. My students are hungry for knowledge. Will you please help? I am asking you, from the bottom of my heart, to grant my classroom fiction and non-fiction books. My goal is for students to read independently, as well as checking out books and reading with their family. Thank you for your generosity.
