Hungry for History!

My students need texts about historical events and figures that are accessible to them at their reading levels; the "Who Was...?" series and the "If You Lived..." series are wonderful ways for students to explore history.

My Students

My students have fallen in love with reading and the people they meet, places they visit, and adventures they encounter through books! I want to stock my classroom library with as many wonderfully exciting, challenging, and engaging books as possible, in the hopes that my students will not only embrace reading and learning, but embrace others and the world around them.

My 2nd graders attend a collaborative, diverse, and creative public school in Brooklyn, NY.

We teach our students to be intellectually curious learners, socially responsible citizens, and dynamic problem solvers.

My Project

My students love our Black History Month unit and have expressed a great deal of interest in learning more about other historical events and figures. They love finding connections between themselves and their lives and the lives of those who lived 10, 100, 1,000 years ago! However, sometimes historical texts can be difficult to access and engage in for younger students.

Reading creative, engaging biographies and historical texts will allow my students connect to those who came before them and helped shape the world of which they're a part.

We focus a lot on the differences between "then" and "now" in our Social Studies units, and using these books to make personal connections will deepen students' understandings of other time periods, cultures, and historical timelines. These books will not only tie into our Social Studies units but also to our writing, during which we focus on writing personal narratives. Having strong examples of biographies and autobiographies will help students work on their own narratives.
