This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students struggle with every part of the reading process. Comprehension and interest level are the main roadblocks for my kids. They need a highly engaging book appropriate for their age, but they also need a book at a level they can access. That is a very difficult combination to find.
My students are smart, capable, and hilarious.
But they are also disenfranchised and disadvantaged. They are reading several years behind grade level. They need support from just about everyone if they're going to become better readers. The first step to providing that support is actually getting a book in their hands.
My Project
The Hunger Games is a great solution for my kids. It grabs and keeps students' attention, which would be nothing short of a miracle for a student who doesn't like to read. The book is also written on a fifth grade reading level, making it right on target for the majority of my students, most of whom are hovering at a fourth grade reading level. With an engaging book that they can understand and access, they can feel successful as a reader. It is far more likely to become a lifelong reader if a student can truly engage in the text and enjoy it.
Buying a class set of books sounds like something simple.
But this is one of those "it takes a village" moments, and I need your help. Even the smallest donation goes toward the building of lifelong readers.
