This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I work with "at promise" high school minority students who struggle in multiple areas: academics, attendance, and behavior. This intervention class I teach is designed to provide these students with academic and social-emotional support to be successful in high school and provide them with opportunities to develop their leadership skills.
Being a teenager is hard and transitioning into high school is also hard- I want my students to know from day one that I will do my best to meet BOTH their physical and emotional needs this year.
My goal is to have a gift bag for each student to welcome them to high school. I will include some essential school supplies donated from other funded projects along with these snacks. When we think of what students “need” in order to focus and succeed in school, we usually think of writing utensils, books, etc., but students also need to be hydrated and have food in their stomachs for optimal learning. The snacks and drinks from this project will help with the physical “needs” for student learning.
