This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students come from financially unstable, very broken, very dysfunctional homes and tend to struggle academically. However, each one of them desperately wants to succeed and tries really hard to do so. I want nothing more than see my students succeed this year. Our school has a large population of homeless students, and my class has several of those students. I constantly hear about how they are hungry.

My Elementary School is a Title 1 school with a Two Way Dual Language Program.

We are located in Colorado. Our school serves students in grades K-6 for a total of approximately 630 students, the vast majority aprox. (97%) of which receive free and reduced lunch and come from a hispanic background.

My Project

My plan is to have "life essential" snacks available during all independent group work time (specially writing), that way my students can focus on the topic at hand and not their growling bellies. They are always complaining about how hungry they are. Our lunch is served really late and unfortunately the food tends to be less than appealing and inadequate, and so the kids only eat a small portion of it. I am requesting different kinds of healthy snacks.

The goal is to cure hunger in my classroom.

Eight hours is a lot to spend in a classroom, especially with a full cognitive load. These snacks will allow my students to better focus on the lesson at hand instead of how hungry they are and how much longer until lunch.
