This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Each day my students come into my room ready to learn, as long as their stomachs are full. The problem impacting my school includes the lunch waves, lessened teacher funds and the economic hardships parents face in their low financial environment. Due to our late lunch shift, my students are constantly hungry and asking for a snack. I provide them time to eat snack each morning; sometimes twice, in the morning and afternoon. Many of my students don't have a snack to bring to school, so I provide them with snacks during each snack period to help hold their brain power throughout the day.
I have encouraged my students to SPEAK OUT and take the pledge and stand up in the fight against hunger.
We will directly address this problem in our school by starting a snack program at school where students who do not have a snack can come get a snack free of charge at any point throughout the day. We also plan to use these snacks as ziploc to-go bags and send home to families in needs. The requested resources will help my students learn the skills necessary to not only speak out about this problem in our community and provide food for those in need but also encourage others to do the same in hopes that the greater community sees and hears us. Let's make a difference together.
When a stomach starts to growl, a student starts to lose momentum. I do not want to see hunger hold Jefferson students back from reaching their full potential. They are all bright shining starts with dreams as big as the eye can see. A donation to this project will help fund our snack program to keep student brains working at full speed long after the day is over.
