Hunger for History: Super-Scholars Need Newbery Knowledge

My students need 5 copies each of 6 Newbery book titles to deepen their knowledge of American history through studying the diverse scholarship of Newbery Award authors Russell Freedman and Jim Murphy.

My Students

"Of all our studies, history is best qualified to reward our research." --Malcolm X. Our students have a budding curiosity about the past and future. They are beginning to see current circumstances as products of prior events. They wonder, "How did we get here?" and "Where will we go from here?"

Our students are a highly motivated group of young scholars from a racially and ethnically diverse school where close to 80% of students are eligible for free or reduced price lunch.

Every day, they check out books from our classroom library to take home to read. Many of these books are history books. Our students share their new knowledge regularly with each other in spontaneous conversations at lunch, recess, and after school. With each new bit of historical knowledge, they form new connections between events and refine their perspectives. Just yesterday, a student raised her hand and made a connection between the American Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s and the revolutionary events in Libya!

My Project

With your help in obtaining five copies each of *The Great Fire*, *An American Plague: The True and Terrifying Story of the Yellow Fever Epidemic*, and *Boys War* by Jim Murphy and *Eleanor Roosevelt: A Life of Discovery*, *Lincoln: A Photobiography*, and *Life and Death of Crazy Horse* by Russell Freedman our students will be able to gather in groups and discuss the issues presented in each text. Students then will be able to present their historical discoveries as a group to their classmates who are studying different historical periods. With topics ranging from medicine to war, from American Indian to American Women's rights, in time periods ranging from the 18th to the 20th century, our students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in historical texts written by the historians crafting the finest material for young readers.

I wish you could see how our students shoot up their hands to ask to be the first student in the class to read the new books that enter our classroom.

It is a shame that I can only afford single copies of these texts when so many more students are interested in the material. Who can tell how many opportunities for idea sharing between students are missed because only one student can read a text at a time. Would you please help our students to read what they want, when they want?
