This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"I do believe something very magical can happen when you read a good book." - J.K. Rowling
Students at my school are eager to learn and engage in challenging curricula that will prepare them to graduate high school and attend college.
Many of the students are the first in their families to graduate from high school and attend college. They have dreams of making a difference in the world, starting with service to their own community during their high school career.
To support students, our school offers a three-year strand of writing electives to provide opportunities for extended reading and writing, allowing students to develop the skills necessary to be literate for a lifetime.
My Project
These books will engage students in a literature circles unit in their writing elective course, Contemporary Global Issues. This course supports students to make connections between events in the past and events in their lives today. Our newly written curriculum allows students to explore different types of writing and different regions of the world through the lens of human rights. Now, we need the books to implement it!
In this unit, students will have a choice of different texts to read stories about Latin America in small groups. They will explore how characters in the text endure human rights violations, how characters survive in the face of these violations, and the ways in which leaders abuse power to violate human rights.
Students will read and discuss their selected book and then write a final literary essay in which they explore how the protagonist of the book is personally impacted by the human rights violations.
By providing a rich selection of texts, students will be able to select and read a text that is both highly engaging and appropriate for their reading skill development.
As a result of this unit, students will have access to reading complex texts, multiple opportunities for writing and discussion, and gain a more complex understanding of the impact of human rights violations shape a person through the eyes of a character.
