My Students

My students represent the full range of San Francisco's energy and diversity. Speaking over 15 languages and with families from across the globe, they come to my classroom excited and ready to learn.

Almost half of my students are English Language Learners (ELLs).

These students, many of them from Central and South America and Asia, are striving to learn not only the critical Social Studies skills of historical thinking and citizenship, but also English (a second or often third language for them).

In the coming weeks, these students will be returning to the classroom for the first time in over 18 months. I am committed to building a classroom environment with them that is caring, humane, equitable, dynamic and filled with questions and learning.

My Project

My students have been learning from home, 100% on computers, for almost 18 months. As we return to in-person learning, it is vital that we bring our classroom alive with the tools students need to make sense of, document and personalize their evolving knowledge. This project will enable me to provide each student with their own journal/sketchbook to capture their insights throughout the year. Using bins of sharpies and other materials at each table, students will bring those journals alive with creativity and questions.

By donating to this project you will support 75 students in their quest to become critically-thinking historians and geographers.

With journals and writing implements quite literally "in hand," they will engage more fully in the classroom and caste their learner's gaze more carefully out into the world.

In our Advanced Placement Human Geography students will be reflecting on the human and built world around them as they become more engaged and committed citizens, scholars and human beings.
