Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Part of what it means to be human is how we became human. Over a long period of time, as early humans adapted to a changing world, they evolved certain characteristics that help define our species today. The billions of human beings living today all belong to one species: Homo sapiens. Students will learn about how we all have roots extending back 300,000 years to the emergence of the first modern humans in Africa, and back more than 6 million years to the evolution of the earliest human species in Africa.

In this project, students will investigate human ancestry and the phylogeny of the Hominidae family by examining fossil replicas of ancient human ancestors and living members of their human family.

Students will study skulls to piece together a cladogram (evolutionary tree) using 8 representative skulls of the ~18 species of our family tree. Students will also evaluate climate records and behavioral evidence to investigate our amazing story of adaptation and survival.

We will be using excellent reference materials provided by the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History's human origins project. Please note that I am requesting only 4 of the 8 skulls required for this project: Australopithecus afarensis "Lucy", Australopithecus africanus, Homo ergaster, and Homo erectus. These 4 skulls will supplement 4 skulls that were donated to my classroom by the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco: Paranthropus boisei, Homo neanderthalensis, Homo sapiens sapiens, and Pan troglodytes. The 4 additional skulls would complete the set of 8 skulls needed for students to study this fascinating and important topic.
