Human Evolution: How Are Humans Related to Other Hominidae?

Help me give my students the opportunity to study human evolution through an Argument Driven Inquiry lab that allows them to measure hominid skulls.

My Project

The 1000 students of Burlington High School are a diverse and resilient bunch! Within our student population, 38 different languages are spoken, 13% of our students are English language learners, 38% of our students are of the global majority, 17% are on IEPs, and 46% qualify for free and reduced lunch.

In addition to weathering the pandemic, as all students have, our community was hit with another shocking setback.

In late August 2020, just as we were preparing to return to school in person, our building was shut down due to PCB contamination. We were later re-homed in a former Macy's department store. Despite these challenges, especially to my department of science teachers, our students prevailed and we continue to work on enriching our science courses with relevant hands-on experiences for our students.

We are asking for funding to help us continue to provide meaningful instruction for our Biology 1, Honors Biology, and AP Biology students. We would like to purchase two sets of hominid skulls for student lab use. This would allow multiple sections of these courses to complete an Argument-Driven Inquiry Lab on humans relate to other Hominidae.

By giving students access to this hands-on experience for all levels of biology (a required course), we are not only providing a deeper learning experience for students, but we are also supporting our district goals of creating an equitable community as well as having our AP, Honors, and dual enrollment completion and successes reflect the demographics of the high school.
